Sixteen Year Old Justin Ith to Walk out of Franciscan Hospital for Children after Miraculous Recovery

Justin’s Rehabilitation and Care at Franciscan Hospital for Children Has Given Him Back the Ability to Walk

WHO/WHAT:  On Thursday, February 5th, 16- year-old Justin Ith from Revere, MA will be discharged from Franciscan Hospital for Children, where he has spent the last nine months recovering from AMAN Syndrome (Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy), an extremely rare and debilitating form of Guillain-Barré syndrome that causes paralysis and loss of reflexes.

Justin made his way to Franciscan after collapsing on his bathroom floor the morning after his sixteenth birthday. After his diagnosis, Justin spent two months in the Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children’s Hospital unable to walk, talk or breathe on his own. When his condition improved enough he was transferred to Franciscan Hospital for Children to begin his rehabilitation.

During his time at Franciscan, a comprehensive team has worked with him to improve his mobility and strength and help him gain back the ability to breathe on his own without the help of a ventilator, and walk without the assistance of a wheelchair. Through the help of his team and support of his family, Justin is being discharged from Franciscan Hospital and will get to return home.

WHEN:  Thursday, February 5th, 2015–  1 p.m.
