Sister of Notre Dame of Franciscan Hospital for Children Recently presented with 2012 Cheverus Award Medals

Brighton, MA — On Sunday, Nov. 18, Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, presented Sister Peggy Youngclaus, Sisters of Notre Dame of Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton, with the 2012 Cheverus Award Medals during a service at the Cathedral of The Holy Cross.

First presented in 2008 at the conclusion of the Archdiocese’s bicentennial, the annual award recognizes Catholics for their dedicated service to the church and God’s people. Sister Peggy Youngclaus joined 121 laypersons, deacons and religious recipients to receive this year’s award. The criteria for selection states the nominee should be a lay person who has served the church well over an extended period of time and has done so in a quiet, unassuming and, perhaps, unrecognized fashion.

Sister Peggy was chosen for her many years of work on behalf of the Simon of Cyrene Society. Over the last thirty five years she has worked to serve children and adults with disabilities. The Simon of Cyrene Society provides social and spiritual support, advocacy, home visits and holiday celebrations as well as sacramental preparation, a special choir, and vacation/respite opportunities for families and individuals in need.

In her day to day to work at Franciscan Hospital for Children, she offers religious education to children who are receiving care and education at the Hospital. As a member of the Pastoral Care department, she and her peers are available to respond to the needs of patients and families with caring presence. Pastoral services are available to patients and families of all religious and spiritual traditions. The chaplains, together with health care professionals, serve as members of an interdisciplinary team caring for the children.

Said Sister Peggy of her award, “I was taught never to be impressed by something unless it was inspiring. Meeting the other recipients of this award and seeing people of God being recognized for their simple faith and volunteerism was absolutely inspiring.”
