Fun with Books
We hope all of our Kennedy Day School students and families are doing well during this school break. KDS staff have been working very diligently to put together as many
resources as possible to send to our students and families.
We are delighted to offer this new web page which will feature a unique video series called: Fun with Books. KDS staff have put together creative videos for their
students to watch at home. We highly value the education of our students and want them to continue learning at home.
Below you will find teacher made learning videos that will provide students with
familiar faces and voices as we try to simulate our KDS classroom at home as much as possible. We will continue to share new videos as they are created.
For more information please contact Bonnie Paulino, Director of the Kennedy Day School, at 617-254-3800 x6160.

Spring Poetry: When Green Becomes Tomatoes (video link)
– Teacher Angela reads the spring chapter of a poetry book called “When Green Becomes Tomatoes- Poems for All Seasons” by Julie Fogliano. Each chapter of the poetry book focuses on a different season. Use this video to begin a discussion with your student about poetry, and then print the attached PDF to help your student create a poem of their own.
Attached are Symbol Stix boards for each of the senses for the poem: I see, I hear, I smell, I feel. Print out the symbols and present your student with choices for each- they can choose multiple! Help your student glue down their choices for each sense. You now have a poem about spring!

- “The Mitten” by Jan Brett (video link)
– As you are following along with the read-a-loud of The Mitten, feel free to take these symbols and suggestions to make it more interactive. On the pdf below you will find the animals from the story, along with some useful vocabulary. You can print these animals out and practice adding them to your own mitten at home! If you do not have a mitten, you can trace or have help tracing your hand in the shape of a mitten. Once it is cut out and decorated to your liking, tape a plastic bag to the the back of the mitten and add the animals to the mitten as you go! If you’d like to just look at the symbols as you go, that’s great too! Enjoy! VIEW HERE - “Today I feel Silly” by Jamie Lee Curtis (video link)
– On the PDF below use the vocabulary board to practice all of the different kinds of feelings! You and the person you are with can follow along with the story using the SymbolStix symbols attached (they might look a little different then the ones I am using in the book, which are Boardmaker). If you want, you and a partner can practice making the faces yourselves! Can you guess what the other person is feeling based on their facial expression? How are you feeling? Remember- it’s ok to feel however you are feeling! Thanks for practicing! VIEW HERE - “Teeth Brushing Fun” with Carrie (video link)
– Follow along while I read “Teeth Brushing Fun,” (from the Reading A-Z curriculum) and we work on vocabulary including clean, dirty, toothbrush, the number 2, and toothpaste. You can even brush your teeth with me at the end if you want! - My Counting Book (video link)
